This year, as an FPGA designer and a developer of FPGA proprietary tools, I plan to look up from my desk and see what's new in the world of tools. There is a boatload of new stuff out there, and to be honest, the chore is a bit daunting. Lots of tools solving problems I don't have, lots of tools that do the same thing as the old tools, just using different buzz words, and lots of tools that spark the imagination but have no gas to keep them running.

Still, I'd like to find the tools to work myself out of the proprietary tool development part of my job. Maybe 2010.

Another resolution

OK, FPGA New Year's resolution. Good idea! I resolve to spend more time with the myriad development kits that are parked on the shelf here at FPGA Journal. I'm starting with the Altium Nanoboard 3000 and the Arrow/Altera BeMicro FPGA-based MCU Evaluation Board (or dongle, almost really).

I always learn a lot hands-on with development boards and tools that I can't easily uncover interviewing other users and vendor reps.
